BJP Worker Found Dead At Bengaluru Party Office, Blames Congress MLA In Note: 'My Death Should Be Lesson'

It is suspected that the worker, identified as 35-year-old Vinay Somaiah, was unable to cope with the distress caused by his arrest.

A BJP worker, previously detained over remarks concerning Congress MLA AS Ponnanna, was found dead by suicide on Friday. Ponnanna also serves as the Legal Advisor to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The incident took place within the jurisdiction of Hennur police station in Bengaluru during the early hours. It is suspected that the worker, identified as 35-year-old Vinay Somaiah, was unable to cope with the distress caused by his arrest. Reports indicate that he ended his life at the BJP office in HBR Layout after sharing a note in a WhatsApp group.

Background Of The Case

Two months ago, Vinay Somaiah, originally from Kodagu district, was taken into custody for allegedly making a comment about MLA Ponnanna. As the administrator of a WhatsApp group where the remark was posted, he faced legal action following a complaint lodged by Congress worker Tennera Maina, reported IANS. The Madikeri police subsequently registered an FIR against Vinay and two others.

Vinay was arrested and later granted bail. His family stated that the High Court had later stayed the investigation into the matter. In his final message, Vinay expressed distress over what he described as humiliation and undue harassment, claiming the ordeal had deeply impacted his self-respect and dignity.

He is survived by his parents, wife, and child. Apart from his political involvement, Vinay worked as an operations manager in a private company.

BJP State President BY Vijayendra has reportedly gathered details regarding the incident and it is said that the party is preparing to stage a protest against MLA Ponnanna in the coming days.

Police Will Investigate: Home Minister

"Concerned DCP will investigate and based on the investigation report action will be taken. Whatever may be the reason, if any such involvement of anyone as alleged is found, it will be examined. Facts will come out during the investigation, once FIR is registered investigation will follow. Based on the outcome, whoever it is, action will be taken," Home Minister G Parameshwara said.
