Here are the top developments of the day in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case involving Atiq Ahmed:

  • Atiq Ahmed, who was brought to Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj for the verdict in the 2007 Umesh Pal kidnapping case, was awarded rigorous life imprisonment by an MP-MLA court in Prayagraj on Tuesday.

  • After the hearing, he was returned to the isolated cell in one of the barracks at Naini Central Jail.
  • Ahmed's brother Khalid Azeem, also known as Ashraf, was acquitted in the case. However, Ashraf is still an accused in the Raju Pal murder case.

  • According to SSP Shashikant said Ashraf "left for Bareilly" right after the verdict. Ashraf has been lodged in Bareilly District Jail since 2020. He was brought to the Naini Jail amid tight security and lodged in a different barrack, separated from Atiq.

  • After the verdict, Umesh Pal’s mother Shanti Devi said that she hoped the gangster-turned-politician is given a death sentence for the murder of her son. “It has been 18 years since my son was kidnapped. He was a fighter. I have faith in the court. He (Atiq Ahmed) was sentenced to life imprisonment for kidnapping my son but he should be given a death sentence for the murder of my son. I have faith in UP CM Yogi Adityanath,” she said.

  • Echoing the demand for a death sentence, Pal’s wife Jaya Devi said they were satisfied with the judgment. “We are satisfied with the judgment as of now. Atiq Ahmed should be given a death sentence for killing my husband. We want justice and I request UP CM Yogi Adityanath to help us. If he and his brother will survive, it will be a problem for us and the society,” she said.

  • Meanwhile, Raju Pal's widow, Puja Pal, who is an SP MLA from Chail, was quoted as saying by news agency IANS, “Ashraf is more ferocious than Atiq Ahmad and his acquittal is very shocking because he is a hardcore criminal."
