Heorin Worth Rs 11 Crore Seized By Assam Police STF, 3 Drug Peddlers Arrested

Three drug peddlers were arrested after the Assam police Special Task Force recovered and seized heroin worth Rs 11 crore.

A large quantity of heroin worth Rs 11 crore was seized by the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam police and Kamrup district police in two separate operations. Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of the STF was given information about the same by the Kamrup district police late Saturday. Using the given details they launched an operation and recovered 700 grams of heroin from a vehicle and arrested three drug peddlers, according to news agency ANI. 

Mahanta said that the Additional Superintendent of Kamrup district police, Kalyan Pathak, received the information that three couriers — Abdul Hai, Mohidul Islam and Rofikul Islam were carrying narcotics from Guwahati to Dubri by a vehicle. 

The vehicle was intercepted by a police team in the Palashbari area out of which they recovered 50 soap boxes containing as many packets of heroin that together weighed 700 grams. 

As per ANI, the market value of the seized drugs is estimated at around Rs 11 crore.

Further investigation is underway. 

In another instance, the Assam Rifles (East) reported a successful operation wherein they recovered 150 bags of illegal Burmese areca nuts in the general area of Melbuk in Mizoram’s Zokhawthar and 33 grams of heroin along with one worth Rs 1.07 crore. An official told ANI, that a man was also apprehended in connection to a death. The two separate operations were carried out by teams of Assam Rifles and Custom Department Zokhawthar based on specific information.

The accused was later handed over to the Customs Department, Zokhawthar, and Police Station Champhai for further legal proceedings.

"The entire consignment recovered and apprehended individual has been handed over to Customs department, Zokhawthar, and Police Station Champhai for further legal proceedings," an official statement was quoted by ANI.

The Assam Rifles have continued their efforts against illegal smuggling and also doubled their efforts to nab the kingpins who continue to smuggle contraband items in Mizoram.

The ongoing smuggling of contraband items is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram and India.
