'Assam No Longer Has Any Tribal Militant Group': Amit Shah After Inking Peace Pact With Dimasa National Liberation Army

New Delhi: Assam no longer has any tribal militant group, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said after signing a peace pact with Dimasa National Liberation Army on Thursday. Insurgent group Dimasa National Liberation Army signed a peace pact with the Assam government at the office of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in presence of Union Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and other senior officers of MHA and Assam Government.

It is to be noted that earlier this month, the Dimasa National Liberation Army had announced the extension of unilateral ceasefire. Juhthai, the chief of the outfit, wrote to Assam Chief Minister informing DNLA’s decision to extend the ceasefire by another six months.

On September 2021, the Dimasa National Liberation Army in response to the Assam Chief Minister’s demand for peace had declared a unilateral ceasefire for a period of six months. The declaration came two weeks after the Dimasa National Liberation Army was accused of opening fire on a convoy of seven trucks on August 26 in the Dima Hasao district, that killed five people and injured one.

It is to be noted that Dimasa National Liberation Army was established in April 2019 to pursue Dimasa people’s sovereignty through an armed campaign. The Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts, as well as some other areas of the neighbouring Nagaland, are thought to be active hotspots of the Dimasa National Liberation Army.

According to the Memorandum of Understanding, the DNLA will lay down the arms and abide by the Constitution. According to reports, a total of 179 DNLA cadres will surrender their arms.
