Tensions have been flaring between Assam and Mizoram over an inter-state border dispute with both states deploying heavy deployment of Police personnel along with border areas.
Dispur/ Aizawal: Amid the ongoing dispute along the Mizoram-Assam border, a war of words ensued between Chief Ministers of both the states asking for Centre's intervention to bring an immediate end to the crisis.
The border tension turned violent days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah visit Meghalaya during the weekend and even held a close-door meeting with Chief Ministers of northeast states.
Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga on Monday took to Twitter and shared a clip that showed police trying to stop a clash among men armed with sticks. Zoramthanga even tagged Shah and sought his immediate intervention.
Responding to this, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma too shared a clip on Twitter and claimed that a superintendent of Police from Mizoram was asking Assam’s officials to withdraw from their post until then their civilians won't listen nor stop the violence.
Sarma also sought Shah's intervention at the earliest possible.
Soon after, Mizoram CM replied to Sarma saying: "After a cordial meeting of CMs (chaired) by Shah, two companies of Assam Police with civilians lathicharged and tear gassed civilians at Vairengte Auto Rickshaw stand inside Mizoram today. They even overrun CRPF personnel/Mizoram Police."
Zoramthanga further went on to share another video on Twitter and said an innocent couple were “manhandled and ransacked by thugs and goons” on their way back to Mizoram via Cachar in Assam. “How are you going to justify these violent acts?” he wrote.
Sarma, in his latest tweet, said that he had spoken to his Mizoram counterpart and reiterated that Assam will maintain status quo and peace between the borders.
