The incident, which shocked the city, took place on December 23, 2024. Gnanasekaran, a resident of Kottur and operator of a nearby biryani stall, was accused of trespassing onto the university campus, where he sexually assaulted a female student in a secluded area and physically attacked her male companion, reported The News Minute.
Swift action followed the incident, as the survivor and a professor from the university’s Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) committee lodged a formal police complaint. Gnanasekaran was apprehended by the Greater Chennai Police just two days later, on December 25.
During the trial, the defense argued for leniency in sentencing, citing personal circumstances. However, the prosecution firmly opposed, emphasizing the severity of the crime and the accused's extensive criminal history.
