Anantnag Encounter Live Updates: A gunfight broke out in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag on Wednesday in which two senior officers of the Army and a senior cop of the J&K Police were killed. Colonel Manpreet Singh of the 19 Rashtriya Rifle of the Indian Army, Major Aashish Dhonchak, and Deputy Superintendent of Police Himanyun Muzamil Bhat were among the deaceased who were killed in the gunfight. The incident took place when the security forces launched a counter-terrorism operation in the Gadole area of Kokernag Tehsil in Anantnag district, where terrorists were hiding, on Wednesday morning, reported PTI, quoting a police officer.
The responsibility of the attacks was claimed by the Resistance Front, a shadow group of the Lashkar-e-Taiba.
The troops were being led by Army officers from the front as they searched for the terrorists in the area based on specific intelligence, Indian Army officials were quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah expressed condolence over the incident.
"Terrible terrible news from J&K. An army colonel, a major and a J&K Police DYSP gave the ultimate sacrifice in an encounter in Kokernag area of South Kashmir today. DySP Humayan Bhat, Major Ashish Dhonack, and Colonel Manpreet Singh laid down their lives in an encounter with terrorists. May their souls rest in peace & may their loved ones find strength at this difficult time," he posted on X.
Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, also expressed her grief over the loss of lives.
"My deepest condolences to the families of the jawans who were martyred today while on duty in Anantnag. There is no place for such heinous acts of violence," her post read on X.
On Thursday, fresh incidents of firing were reported in Anantnag, a day after the gunfight took place.

Kashmir Zone Police tweets, "Kokernag Encounter Update: Rtd Police/Army officers should avoid the “Ambush Hypothesis”. It is a specific input-based ops. Ops is in progress and all 2-3 trapped terrorists will be neutralised: ADGP Kashmir"
One More Soldier Killed In Anantnag Encounter
One more soldier has lost his life in the Anantnag operations. He had been reported missing since yesterday. During joint security operations against terrorists in Anantnag area, forces dropped grenades on suspected terrorist hideout locations using drones. Grenade launchers also being used by troops to target the group of terrorists hiding in the area, security officials said as reported by ANI.
Govt Taken Strict Action Against Terrorism, Befitting Reply Will Be Given: Anurag Thakur
On Anantnag Encounter, Union Minister Anurag Thakur told ANI, "It is a very sad incident but a befitting reply will be given...In J&K, Congress accorded Article 370 and because of that 40,000 people have lost their lives so far...we have taken strict action against terrorism by Pakistan, in the last 9 years and so many terrorists have been killed..."
