Ambedkar Book Launch: Vijay Questions DMK Over Thiruma’s Absence; VCK Chief Denies Alliance Pressure

Yet, Thol Thirumavalavan lauded Vijay's efforts to promote Ambedkar’s ideals.

Chennai: Actor-politician Vijay stirred controversy on Friday by suggesting that Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol Thirumavalavan skipped a book launch event due to "alliance pressure" from the ruling DMK. Vijay’s remarks were made at the release of the book Ellarukkumana Thalaivar: Dr Ambedkar (Leader for All: Dr Ambedkar), co-published by VCK deputy general secretary Aadhav Arjuna, coinciding with the death anniversary of the Constitution’s architect, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Speaking at the event, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader Vijay commented, "VCK President Thirumavalavan has been unable to come here today. I can guess how much pressure he must be under because of being in the alliance. He cannot even attend an event related to Ambedkar."

The remarks prompted an immediate rebuttal from Thirumavalavan, a staunch advocate of Ambedkar's principles. Addressing reporters in Trichy, the VCK chief clarified, "It is Vijay's personal opinion. I am under no pressure from the DMK or its allies. There are no contradictions between the VCK and the DMK; we continue to work together to safeguard the Constitution and the nation."

Explaining his absence, Thirumavalavan stated that his decision to avoid the event was to prevent "vested interests" from politicizing his participation. "I had already informed the publisher of my decision. There are no issues with Vijay or regrets regarding the book launch," he said.

Thirumavalavan further lauded Vijay's efforts to promote Ambedkar’s ideals. "I am happy that Vijay has released a book on Dr. Ambedkar. It is essential to bring Ambedkar’s thoughts to the people," he remarked.

The episode has sparked discussions in political and public spheres, highlighting the intricate dynamics within the DMK-led alliance and the political climate surrounding Ambedkar’s legacy in Tamil Nadu.
