Actor-Politician Vijay Granted Y-Category Security, AIADMK Questions Motive

Senior AIADMK leader KP Munusamy alleged that the security cover for Vijay might be a strategic attempt by the BJP to woo the actor ahead of 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

In a significant development, the Ministry of Home Affairs has granted 'Y' category security cover to actor-turned-politician Vijay, the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The 'Y' category security cover includes personal security officers (PSOs) and armed guards.

The move has sparked a political debate, with the AIADMK questioning the timing and intent behind the decision. Senior AIADMK leader K.P. Munusamy raised concerns on Friday, suggesting that the security cover might be a strategic attempt by the BJP to woo Vijay ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Munusamy pointed out that Vijay, who launched his political party in February 2024, has been drawing large crowds and emerging as a prominent figure in the state’s political arena. "I would be happy if the Centre had been generous in providing him with security. If not, has he been given this security to win him over to the BJP side," Munusamy said during a press interaction, as per PTI.

On the other hand, Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai defended the decision, stating that the security cover was granted after multiple intelligence agencies flagged potential threats to Vijay’s life. Annamalai criticised the ruling DMK government for failing to provide adequate security to the actor-politician, despite his growing influence and public engagements, reported India Today.

Vijay, a popular Tamil film star, formally entered politics last year with the launch of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. His party has positioned itself as an alternative to both the DMK, which currently governs the state, and the BJP at the Centre. Vijay’s entry into politics has been closely watched, given his massive fan following and ability to mobilize crowds.

Earlier, Vijay also met political strategist Prashant Kishor and reportedly discussed on the next course of action.
