2 Thalassery Sub-Inspectors Transferred After They Booked 87 CPM Workers For Assaulting Cops At Temple Ground

The incident, which took place during the Manoli Kavu Theyyam festival on February 20, involved CPM workers reportedly attacking officers and forcibly freeing a detainee from police custody.

Two sub-inspectors from Thalassery Police Station have been transferred after filing cases against 87 members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) for allegedly threatening, abusing, and assaulting police personnel. The incident, which took place during the Manoli Kavu Theyyam festival on February 20, involved CPM workers reportedly attacking officers and forcibly freeing a detainee from police custody.

Sub-inspector Akhil T K has been reassigned to Kolavallur Police Station, while sub-inspector Deepthi V V has been moved to Kannur Town Police Station, as per reports on Times of India. The transfers come in the wake of tensions that arose when officers attempted to intervene in a clash between CPM and BJP workers during the festival.

Case Against CPM Workers

According to reports, seven CPM workers assaulted the police officers and warned them that their political influence would ensure the officers’ removal if they continued their intervention, reported Manorama. The situation intensified when sub-inspector Deepthi attempted to arrest Dipin Ravindran, the prime accused in the case. Around 60 CPM activists allegedly blocked the police vehicle, freed Ravindran by force, and issued death threats against the officers if they proceeded with the arrest.

Further clashes erupted when over 50 CPM members allegedly obstructed police efforts to detain another party activist accused of assaulting officers during the festival. The officers had initially intervened to de-escalate a dispute between BJP and CPM supporters, but the situation quickly turned violent.

In another event, related to the incident, more than 50 CPI(M) activists allegedly locked up police officers and forcibly freed an accused party worker from custody. The individual was wanted for allegedly assaulting four police personnel during a temple festival the previous day. Further, a case was registered against the party workers who were instrumental in the incident,
