India-bound Fourth-Gen BMW X5 Unveiled

After teasing a fully camouflaged version of the fourth-gen X5 testing in the desert, German carmaker BMW has now unveiled the final production-spec version of the SUV in its entirety. The new model comes just four years after the introduction of the third-gen X5. It is based on the brand’s new CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform, which also underpins the 7 Series, 5 Series, X3 and the upcoming X4.

The new X5 is larger than its predecessor in every possible way. It is 4992mm long, 2004mm wide and 1745mm tall, making it 36mm longer, 66mm wider and 19mm taller than the model it replaces. The wheelbase has also grown by 42mm and now stands at 2975mm.

As far as the design is concerned, the new X5 is a quintessential BMW SUV and sports similar design elements as seen on its younger siblings, the X1 and the X3. The front fascia features large kidney grille with active flaps flanked by the chunky dual barrel LED headlamps. At the back, it gets a split tailgate, which is on offer for the first time in the X5.

When you look at it from the side, the increase in length is evident although it looks quite similar to its predecessor in profile. The new X5 is the first BMW to get 22-inch alloys, which are available as an optional fitment.

The X5’s cabin continues to bear resemblance to various other BMW cars. However, the new X5 gets the BMW Live Cockpit Professional display, which is standard across the X5 range. It employs two 12.3-inch displays - one behind the steering wheel that serves as an instrument cluster and the other placed on the centre console that acts as the iDrive infotainment system, which finally gets touchscreen capabilities apart gesture controls seen on the 7 Series and 5 Series sedans. Other features on offer include optional BMW laser light with adaptive LED headlights, multifunctional seats with massage function, four-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof and Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system.

For added comfort and safety, the new X5 gets BMW’s Driving Assistant Professional system. It includes active cruise control with stop and go function, steering and lane control assistant, lane change warning and lane departure warning, side collision protection, evasion aid, crossing traffic warning, priority warning,  wrong-way warning and an automated park assist system. For the first time, an emergency stop assistant is also available on the X5. The system applies the brakes automatically and steers the SUV to the side of the road if it senses an impending collision.

BMW has introduced the new X5 with four engine options. The most powerful of them is the new 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol motor that makes 462PS of max power and 650Nm of peak torque (available on the xDrive 50i variant). Other engines on offer include a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine (on the X5 xDrive 40i) that produces 340PS and 450Nm and a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel engine, which is available in two states of tune - 265PS and 620Nm on the xDrive30d and 400PS and 760Nm on the M50d, which is only available with the M Sport package. Power is sent to all four wheels via a standard 8-speed automatic transmission and a rear-biased all-wheel drive system.
