Hyundai Kona EV Could Be Priced Below Rs 30 Lakh In India

Hyundai has launched its compact electric SUV, the Kona EV, in the UK. It is being offered with two powertrain options: a 100kW (139PS) motor with a 39kWh battery pack and a 150kW (204PS) motor with a 62kWh battery pack. Prices of the EV start from £29,440 and go up to £36,295 (~ Rs 26.64 lakh to Rs 32.84 lakh).

Hyundai has already confirmed that it will launch the Kona EV in India in 2019 and it will be brought here as a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) unit. The carmaker has not said anything about its pricing yet but we expect it to be priced at par with the UK market, much like how the Tucson is available in India at Rs 18.29 lakh while it retails at £20,160 (Rs18.24 lakh converted) in the UK.

We expect Hyundai to offer the Kona EV in India with the less powerful 100kW motor only, in order to keep its prices under Rs 30 lakh. The 100kW motor draws current from a 39kWh lithium-polymer battery. It makes 139PS, a healthy figure considering the expected price point, and 395Nm, and has claimed range of upto 300km. Charging the EV to 100 per cent from a standard AC power source will take up to 6 hours. The 100kW Kona EV can go from 0-100kmph in 9.3 seconds and has a top speed of 167kmph.

Some of the features offered with the Kona EV are six airbags, ABS, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian recognition, electronic stability control, forward collision warning, hill launch assist, lane keep assist and tyre pressure monitoring system. Also on offer are auto climate control, automatic headlamps, LED DRLs, cruise control, reverse parking sensors with camera and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

Hyundai Kona EV Could Be Priced Below Rs 30 Lakh In India When launched, the Kona EV will not have any direct rival in India. However, considering a price of just under Rs 30 lakh, buyers will have the option to pick conventionally powered premium SUVs as well such as the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Skoda Kodiaq, Isuzu MU-X and the upcoming Mahindra Rexton.
