Mentally Challenged Woman Gang Raped In South Goa, Five Arrested

The accused took the woman to his apartment where four others were present, and all five gang-raped her.

Five individuals were arrested for the alleged rape of a mentally challenged woman in South Goa. The incident occurred in Margao on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

According to a PTI report, Superintendent of Police (South) Sunita Sawant, one of the accused befriended the woman, in her 20s, at the Margao bus stand and took her to another location by bus. The victim said that the man took her to his apartment, where four others joined him, and they allegedly sexually assaulted the woman.

The arrest followed a complaint filed by the woman's mother, with charges brought under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), as per PTI.

According to The Indian Express, the Goa Police solved the case within hours. The accused have been identified as Adil, 18, Shahzad, 18, Viresh,18, Mohammed Yasir, 18, and Mohammed Ali Mulla, 22. The investigation is ongoing, and all the accused have been remanded to seven days of police custody.

As per the news outlet, the woman has undergone treatment for a mental health condition and has been taking medication for some time. She was disoriented and stressed, she confided in her mother, who then reported it to the police.

In a similar incident, two men were arrested and a minor was sent to a juvenile home for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in Kandivali East in Mumbai on January 6. The minor accused, also 17 years of age and staying in the same building as the girl, called her to his home when his kin were away, the Samta Nagar police station official said, as per a PTI report.

The accused's friends Tejas Mahadik, 21, and Omkar Patil,20, were also present. The trio gang-raped her. They also shot objectionable videos to blackmail her.

After she told her parents on Thursday evening, a case was registered.

Mahadik and Patil were arrested under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for gang rape, assault and other offences. While the minor has been sent to a children's correction home.
