Former Jammu & Kashmir Governor Jagmohan passed away after a brief illness in Delhi.

Former Jammu & Kashmir Governor Jagmohan passed away after a brief illness in Delhi yesterday. He was 93.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over Jagmohan's demise. Taking to his Twitter handle this morning, PM Modi said, "Jagmohan Ji’s demise is a monumental loss for our nation. He was an exemplary administrator & a renowned scholar. He always worked towards the betterment of India. His ministerial tenure was marked by innovative policymaking. Condolences to his family & admirers."

Born in September 1927, Jagmohan was a former Indian civil servant, who  served as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and Goa, as well as the 5th Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

Known by the mononym Jagmohan, he was always vocal of the special status given to the state. During his term as Governor, terrorism had erupted in the Valley. Jagmohan called for tough measures against terrorists and separatists, which had drawn admiration. However, Several politicians criticised him for his alleged harsh measures and his tough response to separatist violence.

Jagmogan was honoured with the award of Padma Shri by the President of India on 26 January 1971 "for formulation and implementation of the Delhi Master Plan and for playing a pioneering role in planning and implementation of projects in Delhi".
