As per Manorama News, the protesters attempted to push the barricade, following which the police again used water cannon. Unhinged by the police's action, the activists then continued the protest by climbing over the barricade.
The strike was led by Jebi Mather and Bindu Krishna and was carried out due to the rise in prices of essential commodities, including rice, reported Manorama News.
The opposition leader, VD Saetheesan, while accusing the state of being in an unlivable situation, said that even during the sharp rise in prices, the priority of the government was only waste and corruption.
MP Jebi Mather, who is also the President of Mahila Congress in Kerala, along with three other activists were injured during the march held by Mahila Congress. She was later shifted to a hospital. Mather said that the price hike and unavailability of adequate stocks in Supplyco Maveli stores across Kerala have made the lives of people in Kerala very difficult, reported Asia Net News.
Congress Mahila Morcha workers also protested in Thiruvananthapuram against the Vandiperiyar murder and rape case in December 2023.
