CAA Protests: Situation Under Control In Seelampur After Delhi Police Crackdown & Appeal From Mosque

Reports say the agitators were protesting against police crackdown on students at the Jamia Millia University on Sunday evening.

New Delhi (CAA Protests): Violent protests broke out in Jafrabad and Seelampur areas on Tuesday afternoon over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).  Police fired tear gas shells on demonstrators who resorted to stone-pelting and arson. In view of the protests, entry and exit at Seelampur and Gokulpuri metro stations were briefly shut. Visuals showed broken window panes of buses, torched motorcycle and stones lying on the streets. Plumes of smoke billowed from at least two localities. Some frantic protesters were also seen caught by police personnel and taken to police vans. Reports say around 2,000 agitators were protesting against police crackdown on students at the Jamia Millia University on Sunday evening. An announcement was made from a local mosque appealing and urging to demonstrate peacefully and not resort to violence. Some people have reportedly been injured in the clashes. "This was a peaceful protest, some mischievous elements entered into it and ignited the unrest. The situation is peaceful now after announcements were made from the mosque,"said Imtiaz Ahmed, a local politician told ABP News. A police personnel said he received burn injuries on his leg after being attacked by a bottle of acid. According to an update at 5 pm, some teams of Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force retreated from the protest site after an assurance from the office-bearers of the locality's peace committee group. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal urged people to maintain peace and said there's nothing to be gained by violence. "I appeal to all Delhiites to maintain peace. Violence of any kind cannot be tolerated in a civilized society. Nothing will be gained by violence. Express your sentiments peacefully," he tweeted.
