SC To Hear BJP's Plea Against Calcutta HC Order On Advertisements
The BJP's challenge against a Calcutta High Court order, which refused to intervene in a single-judge decision restraining the party from releasing allegedly MCC-violative advertisements during the Lok Sabha elections, is set to be heard by the Supreme Court on Monday. As per the cause list for May 27 on the apex court's website, a vacation bench comprising Justices J K Maheshwari and K V Viswanathan is slated to hear the plea. The high court's division bench, on May 22, declined to entertain the appeal against the interim order issued by the single-judge bench. This interim order, dated May 20, restrained the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from publishing any advertisements that breached the MCC until June 4, the day the Lok Sabha poll results are slated to be announced. Additionally, the court prohibited the saffron party from disseminating the advertisements referenced by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, as per its petition citing unverified allegations against the BJP and its workers.
