Rajasthan Diwas: 1,200 Prisoners To Be Set Free By Gehlot Govt Today

The decision, which was taken last week on the Chief Minister’s initiative, noted the prisoners in the advanced age group or suffering from serious diseases must be released so that they can avoid the corona infection risk in jails.

Jaipur (Rajasthan): In what comes as a major reprieve for around 1,200 prisoners serving sentences in various jails across the state, Ashok Gehlot-led government will be releasing them on the basis of their good conduct in jails besides those suffering from serious illnesses or are of advanced age on the occasion of Rajasthan Diwas on Tuesday.

The decision, which was taken last week on the Chief Minister’s initiative, noted the prisoners in the advanced age group or suffering from serious diseases must be released so that they can avoid the corona infection risk in jails.

The premature release benefit would be available to those prisoners, who suffering from cancer, AIDS, leprosy and other serious ailments. This would also be available to those ailing prisoners who are blind and depend on others for their daily activities.

Elderly men aged 70 years or more and women aged 65 years or more and who have completed at least one-third of their sentence would be released, PTI reported a statement as saying.

The convicts serving jail terms for serious offences like rape, honour killing, acid attack and mob lynching will, however, not benefit from the state government’s decision. In addition, the convicts serving jail terms after being convicted of offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences, the Arms Act and the National Security Act besides others would also be deprived of this benefit.
