COVID Surge: Health Minister To Hold Review Meeting With Health Officials Of 5 States, UT Today

According to the data released by the Union Health Ministry on Sunday, India reported 1,59,632 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours, the tally being the highest over the last 224 days.

New Delhi: Amid the relentless surge in Coronavirus cases across the country, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will hold a virtual meeting with the health ministers of five states and a Union Territory to review the Covid situation on Monday. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also chaired a high-level meeting on Sunday in order to take stock of the ongoing situation in the country amid the pandemic, the preparedness of the health system, the status of the vaccination drive, and the public health implications of the new Covid variant Omicron.   

Apart from the PMO officials, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, ICMR DG, and other officials were also present in the meeting.

According to the data released by the Union Health Ministry on Sunday, India reported 1,59,632 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours, the tally being the highest over the last 224 days. The number of active patients in the country on Sunday has increased to 5,90,611, the highest in about 197 days. The Covid toll in the country has also risen to 4,83,790 after the death of 327 people in the last 24 hours. Earlier, 1,65,553 cases were reported on May 29 last year.

With the fresh infections, the Omicron tally in the country touched 3,623, out of which 1,409 people have either moved out of the country or recovered. A total of 1,009 cases, the highest number of Omicron have been reported in Maharashtra, followed by 513 cases in Delhi, 441 in Karnataka, 373 in Rajasthan, 333 in Kerala, and 204 in Gujarat.
