3-Month-Old Boy Becomes Youngest To Undergo Kidney Obstruction Surgery: AIIMS

Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences said a three-month-old boy became the world's youngest patient to undergo this procedure after they performed laparoscopic surgery on him.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said on Sunday that doctors performed laparoscopic surgery on a three-month-old boy to remove obstructions in both of his kidneys. According to hospital doctors, the boy is the world's youngest patient to undergo this type of procedure. The procedure was performed in December of last year, and the patient was only released three days later. Meanwhile, three months after the surgery, the doctors performed a renogram to determine the success of the procedure.

An additional professor in the Department of Paediatrics, Dr Vishesh Jain, said on Sunday that the test was performed to confirm that the obstruction in the kidney outflow had been relieved, as reported by news agency PTI.

The procedure was performed on the boy by doctors from the Department of Paediatrics. It is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to treat ureteropelvic junction obstruction, a congenital condition that obstructs the urinary tract and impairs urine flow from the kidneys to the bladder.

In an official statement, AIIMS said, "The successful surgery not only showcases AIIMS' commitment to cutting-edge paediatric surgical care but also highlights the institute's expertise in anaesthesia considerations, resulting in the child's discharge within just three days," as quoted by PTI.

The premier hospital further said the decision to operate on both kidneys using a laparoscopy approach was taken to minimize invasiveness and maximize benefits for the three-month-old boy.

Before conducting the surgery, extensive planning was also conducted to ensure optimal results.

The official statement by the hospital said, "The use of a miniature camera inserted through the belly button improved cosmesis, while additional incisions were strategically placed to facilitate surgeries on both sides without sharing the same incisions.”

Notably, during the two-hour-long operation, the surgical team meticulously reconstructed the obstructed ureteropelvic junction using microscopic sutures and fine instruments.

The hospital said the successful completion of this advanced procedure on such a young child required careful considerations regarding anaesthesia, reported PTI.

The official statement said, "Thanks to the advanced surgical techniques and anaesthesia management employed by AIIMS, the infant experienced a rapid recovery. Within just three days, the child was discharged, enabling a swift return to their family," as quoted by PTI.

Notably, Dr Jain said the laparoscopic approach of surgery also eliminated the need for any such future surgeries.
