Sporty scooters are quite sought after by enthusiasts in urban spaces because they not only offer the convenience of an automatic scooter, but also look cool enough to travel with style. First launched in April 2016, the Ray ZR was an ideal alternative to the popular Honda Dio. Yamaha decided to sprinkle a bit of additional sportiness in the form of a Street Rally Edition of the scooter. Let’s see what it’s all about:

Design:

The Yamaha Ray ZR Street Rally edition features a new headlight fairing which the Japanese bikemaker calls the ‘Wing Style fairing’. The angular styling of the fairing draws inspiration from Yamaha’s manic streetfighter, the MT-09. It also extends on top of the handlebars, neatly acting as a wind deflector. The ‘Knuckle Guard’, as Yamaha calls it, does not really protect the hands from physical impact of debris. 

Even the rear view mirror design is slightly sportier compared to the one in the standard variant, and are borrowed from the FZ25. The design of the apron-mounted headlight is the same as the regular variant, and the design of the ‘Rising Air Tail’ grabrail is similar as well. To set the scooter apart from the regular variants, the bodywork features exclusive liveries. Two colour variants are available- Rally Red and Racing Blue.

Features:

The Yamaha Ray ZR Street Rally Edition also gets a full digital instrumentation, which is similar to the one found in the Cygnus Alpha. There are two front pockets that can take up a half litre water bottle along with other small knick-knacks, and the underseat storage stands at 21 litres. Further enhancing the practicality is a utility hook just below the seat in the foot well. To ensure greater comfort, the single-piece seat features 10mm additional cushioning for greater comfort during long rides. The pillion seat is raised for optimum ergonomics too. Just like the standard model, the Rally Edition also gets an underseat fuel filler cap. Ground clearance is also unchanged, at 130mm.

Powertrain:

The Street Rally Edition shares the same engine as the normal version. It draws power from a 113cc single cylinder SOHC 2-valve Blue Core motor that’s good for 7.1PS at 7500rpm and 8.1Nm at 5000rpm. The Blue Core technology reduces power loss and improves cooling and combustion efficiency, resulting in a claimed efficiency figure of 66kmpl. Fuel is fed via a carburettor only, just like the regular model.

Mechanical Underpinnings:

Yamaha Ray ZR Street Rally edition continues to ride on telescopic front forks and a single shock absorber at the rear. The black 6-spoke 10-inch alloys are shod with 90-section tubeless tyres on both ends. Yamaha offers a 170mm front disc with a single piston calliper as standard in this model. Rear continues to sport a drum unit. Since the Street Rally Edition is a variant of the existing Ray ZR, and not an all-new scooter, it conveniently circumvents the CBS fitment laws for two-wheelers of 125cc and below.

Pricing And Rivals:

Yamaha has priced the Ray ZR Street Rally edition at Rs 57,898, commanding a premium of Rs 2000 over the normal version with front disc brake. Coming to the competition, its chief rivals include the 2018 Honda Dio DLX (Rs 53,837), TVS Jupiter Classic Edition (Rs 57,323) and Hero Maestro Edge dual tone colour variant (Rs 51,300). Compared to its rivals, the Ray ZR Street Rally edition’s sporty design language makes it a unique, value-for-money proposition for the youth.
