It is advised to wake up early on festivals so that puja and rituals could be performed on time (muhurta).

Donate Food To The Needy: Krishna is believed to be the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The childhood tales of Krishna reveal that he was everyone’s friend. Krishna never discriminated against anyone on the basis of any societal prejudices, on the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami people should donate food (and if they can, clothes too) to those who are in need.

Donts of Vrat Niyam Krishna Janmashtami:

Don’t Pluck Tulsi Leaves: Shri Krishna Ji is regarded as an avatar of Lord Vishnu, and Shri Hari (Vishnu Ji) holds Tulsi Vishnu Ji in the highest regard. So on Krishna Janmashtami, tulsi leaves shouldn't be plucked, tulsi leaves are not seen as stale, thus it is best to gather them a day ahead of time to offer to Krishna in worship.

Don’t Eat Rice: Just as it is forbidden to eat rice on Ekadashi, in the same way, on Janmashtami, one should not eat rice even if one is not fasting.

Cow Shouldn’t Be Hurt: Kanha loves cows very much. In his childhood, he used to go cow grazing with the cowherd. Therefore, don't kill a cow and a calf on Janmashtami or any other day, otherwise, Krishna gets angry. Krishna Ji is pleased by serving the cows.

Don't Insult Anyone: All the devotees, rich and poor, are equal to Lord Krishna, so do not disrespect or insult anyone by forgetting on the day of Krishna Janmashtami. Insulting any poor person can anger Shri Krishna.
