There are two popular theories related to the origin of this day. Valentine’s Day is popularly connected to Lupercalia, a raucous Roman festival while another origin related it to the death of St Valentine.

Celebrated from 13 February to 15 February, the Roman festival Lupercalia has an unusual ritual where men were stripped naked along with young maidens spanked with hides of goats in the belief that it will make them fertile. This controversial practice was later discontinued by the end of the fifth century, and replaced with Valentine's Day dedicated to love and companionship.

While the other legend points out at St Valentine was executed on February 14 because of performing secret marriages while they were banned by the Roman emperor Claudius II.
