Happy Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Uttarayan 2022 Greetings: The New Year heralds the beginning of festivities in the country, and one such popular festival dedicated to Sun God is known as Makar Sankranti.  

Celebrated on January 14 every year, the festival signifies a change in season as it is on this day that the Sun changes its movement from Dakshinayana (south) to Uttarayana (north) hemisphere, marking the official end of the winter season.

This year too, the festival will be observed under the shadow of the new Coronavirus variant. However, it has not deterred people from celebrating the festival with their loved ones.

Significance of Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bihu  

The festival also marks harvesting season for the rabi crop in some regions. The festival is mostly connected to crops and is observed in Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Telangana.

Celebrated as Pongal, Makar Sankranti, and Bihu in different corners of India, people from different cultural backgrounds soak into the festive spirit and unite on the occasion.

In Gujarat, Makar Sankranti is known as Uttarayana. Uttarayan, which is observed for two days during Makar Sankranti, is a significant festival in Gujarat. Kite flying remains one of the major attractions of the day.

The festival is celebrated with rituals like taking dips in holy rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, etc, and visiting temples. On this day people enjoy delicious sweets and sumptuous meals.  Traditional dance, kite flying, and various activities define the festival in India.
