Significance

After the death of his father Guru Tegh Bahadur, Guru Gobind Singh Ji became a Sikh guru at the age of nine. He spread the teachings of valour and righteousness.

Guru Gobind Singh introduced the five ‘K’s that traditional Sikhs abide by:

Kesh: Letting hair be in natural state (no trimming or cutting)

Kangha: Wooden comb

Kirpan: A sword or dagger

Kara: an iron or steel bracelet or Kada worn on the wrist

Kacchera: Short breeches

He was a versatile personality being a spiritual master, warrior, poet and philosopher.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji established the Sikh warrior community called ‘Khalsa’ in 1699. He also announced a code of discipline for the Khalsa warriors wherein consuming Tobacco, eating 'halal' meat, fornication, and adultery were forbidden.

Notably, he is credited for finalising the holy Guru Granth Sahib and declaring the primary scripture as the 11th and eternal Guru of Sikhs.

The 10th Guru is also credited with the 'Dasam Granth'.

He fought several battles to protect people against tyrannical and discriminatory rulers, as a believer of Dharam Yudh (war in defence of righteousness) as the last resort. He even lost his 4 sons and mother in the fight against such forces.

Guru Gobind Singh passed away in 1708, believed to be aged 41.
