It is said that if you view the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi, on the fourth day of Shukla Paksha of Bhado, you will be falsely accused. According to one legend, once Lord Krishna visited the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi, he was falsely accused of stealing the Syamantaka gem.

According to Panchang, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the fourth day of Shukla paksha of Bhadrapada month. This year it falls on September 10, 2021. On this day people should not see the moon. Let's know the legend behind it.

Story behind the belief of not seeing the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi

According to mythology, once Lord Ganesha was guarding the main gate of the house as per the orders of Mata Parvati. It was then that Lord Shiva came there and tried entering the house. Lord Ganesha refused to let him in and stopped him from entering the house. Mahadev then angrily cut off Lord Ganesha's head from his torso.

Meanwhile, goddess Mata Parvati ji came there. She apprised Lord Shiva of the disaster he had done. She told him it was his son Ganesha. She told him to bring Ganesha back to life. Then Lord Shiva gave Ganesha a new life by giving him Gajanan mukha. All the deities were blessing Gajanan, but Chandra Dev was smiling at him. Ganesha did not like being ridiculed by Chandra Dev. So in anger, he cursed Chandra Dev to turn black forever. The effect of the curse destroyed the beauty of the moon god and he turned black. Then Chandra Dev realized his mistake and apologized to Ganesha. Ganapati said that Chandra Dev will now be able to appear in its entirety only once a month. That is why the moon appears in his complete glory on the full moon.
