New Delhi: It’s Gandhi Jayanti today, October 2, the 152nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The day is also observed as the International Day of Non-Violence to honour Gandhi’s doctrine and philosophy of nonviolence (ahimsa).

Fondly remembered by Indians as “Bapu”, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Gujarat’s Porbandar. A lawyer, who went on to become a social activist and a writer, Gandhi became the leader of India’s fight for freedom against British rule.

The ‘father of the nation’ is internationally revered for his philosophy and strategy of nonviolent protest during India’s nationalist movement.
