Happy Diwali 2023: Expert Tips For Post Diwali Hair Care Routine

The pollutants deposit on hair and scalp, which lead to dry hair, brittle, and susceptible to breakage, as well as contributing to dandruff, and hair loss.

The post-Diwali period typically witnesses a substantial deterioration in air quality, often reaching hazardous levels, which poses significant health risks and also to hair and skin health. The pollutants deposit on hair and scalp, which lead to dry hair, brittle, and susceptible to breakage, as well as contributing to dandruff, and hair loss.

Jayavant Nayak, who is a part of R&D- Personal Care at Netsurf Communications Pvt. Ltd. said, "Despite the shift towards silent crackers, the lingering menace of air pollution continues to pose a threat, not just to the environment but also to hair health, particularly for those with undernourished hair. The emission of toxic gaseous pollutants like magnesium, cadmium, and zinc from firecrackers adversely impacts various bodily organs, potentially exacerbating existing illnesses. Stepping out amidst the Diwali festivities without adequate hair nourishment can lead to dryness, itchiness, scalp irritation, and excessive oiliness. To mitigate these effects, it is crucial to avoid stepping out with wet hair, ensuring thorough drying and conditioning to seal the hair cuticles. Those spending extended periods outdoors during Diwali should prioritize post-celebration hair care, including thorough shampooing, conditioning, and the application of antioxidant-rich serums to counteract the harmful effects of firecracker smoke."

Here are some tips to rescue your hair post Diwali from pollution suggested by Dr. Akshay Batra, who is the Managing Director, at Dr. Batra’s Healthcare

  • Protect your hair with scarves or hats to avoid exposure to harmful particulate matter that settles on the scalp and hair, leading to discomfort and dryness.

  • Combat dry and lifeless hair during the festival with a warm oil massage to boost scalp health.

  • Stay hydrated, get good sleep, exercise, eat a protein-rich diet, manage stress, and relish your Diwali celebrations to the fullest for healthier hair.

  • Use an appropriate shampoo and conditioner to clean your hair at least 2-3 times a week.

In addition to him, Rajat Mathur, who is a DGM, Learning Academy, at The Body Shop India suggested the following:

    • Shield your hair from direct exposure to pollutants by wearing hats, and scarves, or adopting protective hairstyles. Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids, particularly lauric acid, which has deep conditioning properties. Applying coconut oil before shampooing can help moisturise and nourish the hair, preventing dryness caused by pollution.
    • Wash your hair timely to remove pollutants that may have settled on the hair and scalp. Consider using Ginger ingredient-based shampoo, which helps to cleanse the scalp and remove impurities.
  • Combat dryness caused by pollution with the exceptional moisturizing properties of shea butter. This natural ingredient hydrates and locks in moisture, enhancing overall hair health and elasticity. Alternatively, you can also look moringa as an ingredient. Packed with antioxidants, it neutralizes free radicals and helps maintain the hair's moisture balance.
  • Lastly, prioritize your overall health, drink plenty of water, and follow a well-balanced diet. Adopting these practices and incorporating the suggested products into your hair care routine can embattle your hair against the challenges posed by environmental pollution.
