Earth Day 2024: Kitchen To Travel- Know How To Embrace Zero-Waste Living

Zero waste emphasises the value of investing in reusable things like steel bottles rather than single-use plastic bottles and other disposable items, which is a huge step toward sustainable living.

In today's world, a large number of people have shifted their focus towards living a simple life. They are choosing not to buy things that will harm the environment in the long run. Zero waste emphasises the value of investing in reusable things like steel bottles rather than single-use plastic bottles and other disposable items, which is a huge step toward sustainable living. Studies show that a zero-waste approach can reduce waste emissions by up to 84%. When individuals try to cut down on unnecessary products, they naturally generate less waste which further benefits the environment.

Dr. Rahul Singh, co-founder of EcoSoul Home said, "Opting for zero-waste practices is not just a trend but a necessary step towards a sustainable future. By optimising resources and minimising waste, we can not only offset our environmental effects but also pave a path that leads to a cleaner and healthier planet."

Our dedication to zero waste is also about embracing thoughtful living. We can incorporate a zero-waste strategy in different aspects of our daily life ranging from food, fashion to toys and baby products as well.

Zero-Waste Swaps For A More Sustainable Kitchen:

One place where people can have the greatest impact on sustainability is in the kitchen. From eliminating single-use plastics to minimising food waste- there are lots of basic but powerful changes you can make in your kitchen.

Here are some tips suggested by Nidhi Aggarwal, Founder, SpaceMantra that will guide you through the inventory of easy zero-waste swaps:

1. Reusable Produce Bags: Say no to single-use plastic bags as a storage alternative for fruits and vegetables and purchase reusable mesh or cloths produce bags instead. They are a game changer since they are washable, eco-friendly, and can keep produce fresh for an extended period.

2. Beeswax Wraps: Switch to beeswax wraps instead of plactic cling wrap. The beeswax wraps made of cotton are impregnated by resin, beeswax, and jojoba oil, which is environmentally friendly, reusable and biodegradable instead of plastic wraps.

3. Glass Jars and Containers: Instead of using plastic containers that are thrown away, choose glass jars and containers to store your leftovers or pantry ware. They are sturdy, microwave-friendly, as well as simple to use.

4. Compost Bin: Make your own compost bin in your kitchen to throw cooked and uncooked foods that can decompose. The composting will help to reduce the generation of landfill waste and will result in producing high-quality soil for the gardening.

5. Cloth Napkins and Towels: Replace disposable paper towels and napkins with reusable cloth ones. The use of cloth napkins and towel not only reduces paper waste but also enhances the beauty and class of your dining experience.

6. Bulk Buying: Opt for purchasing dried items as grains, legumes and spices in bulk from zero-waste shops or bulk sections at grocery stores. Bring your own reusable containers or bags for minimizing packaging waste.

In addition, Abhishiek Agarwal, Founder and CEO, Goodeebag added the following suggestions:

  • Green cleaning and maintenance: Make excellent use of items rather than tossing them away. Use do-it-yourself (DYI) approaches to cut down on the use of chemical cleansers and switch to natural ones.
  • Segregating waste: It is a good idea to incorporate trash segregation into your everyday routine to facilitate the removal of dry garbage for recycling. Encourage your family in the use of red, blue, and green trash cans.
  • Stainless steel: Incorporate Stainless Steel Cutlery into your culinary area. Try replacing paper straws with stainless steel ones in your everyday routine.

Zero-Waste Travel Essentials For A Sustainable Trip:

Travelling is an amazing experience that revitalizes the body and the soul. However, the waste that gathers everywhere we walk is a significant disadvantage. Used cutlery, plastic water bottles, and personal hygiene products are among the things that add to the growing waste problem, adding to landfills or contaminating our oceans with microplastics.

Eco-aware tourists can prevent this by taking easy precautions to guarantee they produce no waste while travelling. Here are some tips shared by Anika Wadhera, Head of Marketing - Sirona Hygiene Ltd:

  • Reusable Water Bottle: Use a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and help cut down on plastic waste. A sturdy bottle, which is made of premium stainless steel, is ideal for traveling with water.
  • Travel-Friendly Intimate Wipes: Ensure your personal hygiene while on the go with intimate wipes. The travel-sized packets of biodegradable wipes are easy to use and are composed of natural components.
  • For Women: Use reusable period kits to make your period zero-waste and environmental friendly, especially when traveling. Replace single-use tampons and pads with more environmentally friendly solutions, such as period panties or the period cup. These substitutes are affordable, practical, and, with the right maintenance, long-lasting.
  • Oxo Biodegradable Sanitary Disposal Bags: Compostable sanitary disposal bags allow you to dispose of sanitary products in an appropriate and covert manner. These bags may be securely composted and are made of plant-based materials, which minimises landfill waste. They are also oxo biodegradable.
  • Soap Bars: An ideal traveling buddy! The TSA-friendly, sturdy, and portable bars are perfect for cutting waste when traveling. They gently cleanse and completely purify the skin because they are made with nourishing components.

Zero-Waste Baby Products:

Parents have a responsibility to leave a better world for our children and using toxin-free and eco-friendly baby products, they can embrace a minimalist approach to childcare while reducing waste and environmental impact. Riddhi Sharma, Founder and CEO of BabyOrgano, listed the following ways by which it can be done:

  • Always go for Biodegradable products: Choose biodegradable diapers that are made from materials like organic cotton. These diapers break down naturally, reducing landfill waste and minimizing environmental impact.
  • Choose Toxin Free toys: Always try to prioritise toxin-free toys crafted from safe, non-toxic materials such as wood or organic cotton. Avoid plastic toys containing harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates, which can cause damage to the environment.
  • Go for Organic Baby Products: Opting for organic baby products like lotions, shampoos, and creams ensures that they are free from synthetic chemicals and pesticides. This approach not only emphasises your baby's health, but also encourages environmental sustainability by lowering chemical exposure while promoting eco-friendly production processes.

Zero-Waste Plastic: Convert Them Into Interesting Objects:

Plastic bottles are a common household item that often ends up in landfills or oceans, contributing to environmental pollution. However, with a bit of creativity and ingenuity, these bottles can be transformed into useful and beautiful objects. From home decor to practical tools, here are 10 creative ways suggested by Ridhima Kansal, Director, Rosemoore to reuse and upcycle plastic bottles, turning trash into treasure.

  • Vertical Garden: Turn plastic bottles into a vertical garden by cutting them in half, filling them with soil, and planting small herbs or flowers. Hang them on a wall or fence to create a stunning living wall that adds a touch of greenery to your space.
  • DIY Bird Feeder: Make a bird feeder by cutting a hole in a plastic bottle and filling it with birdseed. Hang it in your garden or balcony and enjoy watching the birds flock to feast.
  • Pencil Holder: Cut the top off a plastic bottle, decorate it with paint or fabric, and use it to store pens, pencils, and other stationery items on your desk.
  • Watering Can: Create a watering can by poking small holes in the cap of a plastic bottle. Fill it with water and use it to water your plants, giving them a gentle and even shower.
  • Scoop: Cut the bottom off a plastic bottle to create a scoop for pet food, birdseed, or garden soil. The sturdy plastic makes it durable and easy to use.
  • Organiser: Cut several plastic bottles in half horizontally and attach them to a board or wall to create a handy organizer for small items like screws, nails, or beads.
  • Lampshade: Cut the bottom off several plastic bottles and string them together vertically to create a unique and eco-friendly lampshade. Place a light bulb inside to illuminate the shade and create a beautiful lighting effect.
