As winter approaches, so does Diwali—a time of joy, warmth, and festivity. However, rising pollution levels are a serious concern across India, prompting several states, including Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, to take action. In an unprecedented move, seven states have imposed a complete ban on traditional firecrackers, allowing only “green crackers” this year. This ban, effective until January 1, 2025, restricts firecracker use to designated windows, such as 8 PM to 10 PM on Diwali night.
These measures reflect a growing awareness of the need for cleaner air and a healthier environment, underscoring the importance of celebrating sustainably. Green crackers, free from harmful chemicals like barium and lead, are now the only type allowed, making it a pivotal moment for eco-conscious festivities.

Let’s Look At Seven Impactful Ways To Celebrate A Truly Eco-Friendly Diwali, One That Aligns With Both Our Cultural Heritage And Our Responsibility Toward The Planet
1. Opt For Green Fireworks To Minimise Air And Noise Pollution
With the ban on traditional firecrackers in place, green crackers are the way to go. These eco-friendly alternatives release 30% less particulate matter and are free from harmful chemicals, contributing significantly less to air pollution. Studies show that the emissions from green crackers are lower, with reduced amounts of dangerous compounds like barium, lead, and mercury. By choosing green fireworks, we not only adhere to legal guidelines but also take a step toward cleaner air, making our celebrations safe for both humans and animals.
2. Embrace Natural And Biodegradable Decorations:
Decorate your home with eco-friendly options. Opt for clay diyas, fresh flowers, and paper or bamboo decorations instead of plastic or synthetic materials. These biodegradable choices bring charm to your home while minimizing environmental harm. This way, your Diwali decor celebrates not just beauty, but also respect for nature.
3. Energy-Efficient Lighting For A Brighter, Greener Future:
Use LED or solar-powered lights to illuminate your celebrations. LED lights consume significantly less energy compared to traditional bulbs, and solar lights leverage renewable energy sources. This choice is not only economical but also an effective way to reduce carbon emissions during the festive season, aligning with the broader need for sustainable energy solutions.
4. Choose Sustainable And Thoughtful Gifts:
This Diwali, make gifting sustainable. Opt for eco-friendly presents like potted plants, handmade crafts, or local artisanal products. When you support local artisans and small businesses, you’re reducing the carbon footprint associated with imported goods. Go the extra mile by wrapping gifts in reusable or recyclable materials, showing thoughtfulness in every part of your gift-giving.
5. Eco-Conscious Clean-Up:
Minimise waste and save water during the annual Diwali clean up. Diwali cleaning is a beloved tradition, but it can be made greener by using biodegradable cleaners and conserving water. Practice waste segregation and composting for biodegradable waste, ensuring that the environment stays as clean as your home. This mindful approach to cleaning reflects a commitment to sustainable waste management and conservation.
6. Reduce Carbon Emissions By Making Low-Impact Choices:
Diwali celebrations often lead to a temporary increase in carbon emissions due to high energy usage and transportation. To minimize your carbon footprint, consider carpooling or using public transport when visiting family and friends. Additionally, avoid over-consumption and use energy-efficient lighting, as already mentioned above, to reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional options. Besides, you should celebrate with food that is delicious and eco-conscious by purchasing ingredients from local farmers’ markets or choose organic options. By supporting local farmers, you help reduce transportation-related emissions and promote healthier food options for your family.
7. Spread Awareness And Inspire A Green Diwali Movement:
Share the joy of celebrating Diwali sustainably with friends, family, and your community. By engaging others in conversations about eco-friendly practices, you help create a ripple effect that amplifies the impact of each sustainable choice. The spirit of Diwali is in sharing light—and by spreading awareness, we can light the way toward a greener future.
