Karnataka: Omicron Dominates Third Wave, Shows Genome Sequencing. 31,198 New Covid Cases Reported
Karnataka on Friday logged 31,198 new Covid cases taking the tally to 37,23,694. The state also reported 50 new fatalities pushing the toll to 38,804.
New Delhi: Amid the raging Covid infections across the southern state, the genome sequencing results in Karnataka showed that the Delta variant of the Coronavirus dominated the second Covid wave while the Omicron wreaked havoc in the third, said state health minister Dr K Sudhakar.
According to the genome sequencing results, 90.7% of the total Covid cases during the second wave were found to be infected by the Delta strain, while in the third ongoing wave, 67.5% of the total patients have contracted the Omicron strain and 26% of the cases are of the Delta variant in Karnataka, said the state health minister in a tweet on Friday.

Meanwhile, Karnataka on Friday logged 31,198 new Covid cases taking the tally to 37,23,694. The state also reported 50 new fatalities pushing the toll to 38,804. A total of 71,092 patients recuperated from the infection taking the active caseload to 2,88,767. The test positivity rate for the day stood at 20.91% while the case fatality rate was 0.16%.
Bengaluru Urban district clocked 15,199 positive cases on a single day and 44,866 patients were discharged. Eight Covid deaths were reported in Bengaluru Urban. Among the districts, Mysuru (1,877), Dharwad (1,500), Tumakuru (1,315), Hassan (1,037) witnessed the higher number of Covid cases on Friday.
In view of the Covid pandemic, the "Carryover provision'' for the academic year 2021-22 for the Diploma students has been declared as applicable to all the subjects, C.N. Ashwath Narayan, Minister for Higher Education said on Friday.
“Earlier, there used to be the provision of carryover for a maximum of 4 subjects for diploma courses. But, considering the surge in the pandemic it has been extended to all the subjects for the current academic year,” the minister said as quoted by news agency IANS, adding that a notice on the matter has been issued.
