PlayStation 5 To Get Accessibility Tags: Here's How The Feature Will Work

At launch, the Accessibility Tags will be visible on several game pages for PS5 and PS4 games.

Sony has declared that it will introduce Accessibility Tags on the PlayStation Store on the PS5 in the upcoming week. According to a recent post on the PlayStation Blog, Accessibility Tags will enable game developers to inform PS5 players about the accessibility features available in their games when they search through each game hub on the PS Store. Developers can add up to 50 Accessibility Tags from six categories, such as Visual, Audio, Subtitle and caption, Control, Gameplay, and Online communication, based on the player's requirements.

For instance, Accessibility Tags under the Visual category include clear text, large text, colour alternatives, audio cues, and directional audio indicators. The Control category's tags allow button remapping, thumbstick sensitivity, and the ability to play without button holds, rapid button presses, or motion controls. The Online communications category has two tags only: text or voice chat transcription and ping communication.

At launch, the Accessibility Tags will be visible on several game pages for PS5 and PS4 games. Several notable games, including God of War: Ragnarok, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, will feature these tags. Nonetheless, some games are playable on the PS5 and PS4, but the tags that are available in the PS5 version may not be included in the PS4 version.

The Accessibility Tags feature is one of Sony's efforts to make gaming accessible for players with disabilities. In January, the company announced a new accessibility controller kit, codenamed Project Leonardo, that allows players with limited motor control to map buttons to any supported function or map two functions to the same button so that they can play for longer periods of time comfortably. The controller kit can be used on its own or paired with another Project Leonardo controller or DualSense controller.
