WWDC 2022: Apple Announces Metal 3 API To Let M2-Powered Mac Machines Run AAA Games 'With Ease'

Games like Grid Legends, Resident Evil Village, and No Man’s Sky are said to run smoothly on new Mac machines.

Apple kicked off its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a plethora of announcements during its keynote address on June 6. The Cupertino tech giant announced its new in-house chip, the M2, as well as a new MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro that will be powered by the new silicon. Now, Mac machines are usually not known for their gaming prowess. However, with the newly announced Metal 3 developer tools, the new M2-powered Mac machines will be able to “run AAA games with ease,” the company said.

Announcing Metal 3, Apple said that AAA titles such as Grid Legends, Resident Evil Village, and No Man’s Sky can now run smoothly on “new” Mac machines.

Metal 3 is designed to power gaming experience across all Apple platforms. It comes with MetalFX Upscaling, which “enables developers to quickly render complex scenes by using less compute-intensive frames, and then apply resolution scaling and temporal anti-aliasing.”

Game developers will also gain access to a new Fast Resource Loading API that can considerably reduce loading times “by providing a more direct path from storage to the GPU.”

Apple’s new M2 chip boasts to be considerably faster than the M1 and is built on a 5nm process. It comprises 25 percent more transistors than the M1, delivering an 18 percent faster CPU and 35 percent faster GPU performances.
