Thank God: Ajay Devgn's Character's Name Changed From Chitragupt To CG Following Backlash

In order to steer clear of any controversy, the makers of 'Thank God' have changed the name of Ajay Devgn’s character from Chitragupt to ‘CG’ and his associate Yamdoot’s to ‘YD’.

New Delhi: Ever since the trailer of Ajay Devgn, Sidharth Malhotra, and Rakul Preet Singh ‘Thank God’ has released, the film has landed into controversy and a case was also filed against the film’s director Indra Kumar, actors Ajay Devgn and Sidhartha Malhotra, in a Jaunpur court for mocking religion and hurting religious sentiments.

In order to steer clear of any controversy, the makers of the film have changed the name of Ajay Devgn’s character from Chitragupt to ‘CG’ and his associate Yamdoot’s to ‘YD’. There are also three other modifications made to the film while submitting the film for certification.

The Indra Kumar directorial received a U/A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Friday.

Earlier on Wednesday, Supreme Court declined to list urgently a petition against the film, scheduled for release on October 25.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice U.U. Lalit and comprising Justice Bela M. Trivedi, said there is nothing urgent here and posted the matter for hearing in November.

Counsel, representing 'Sri Chitragupta Welfare Trust', mentioned the matter before the top court seeking urgent hearing in the matter, and sought directions for removing the trailers and posters of the movie from YouTube and other platforms.

Citing the trailer of the film, the plea claimed that there are derogatory expressions, statements, dialogues and insulting images, and videos in and around the character of God Chitragupta played by Ajay Devgn.

The petitioner claimed that movie posters and the trailer are spreading insulting and derogatory messages against the deity across the country and the world.

In the film, Ajay Devgn is portraying the character of the Hindu deity Chitragupta while Sidharth is playing a common man whose actions will be assessed by Ajay's character in the film.

Chitragupta is the god assigned with the task of keeping complete records of the actions of human beings and rewarding them according to their karma. Upon one's death, Chitragupta decides whether they go to heaven or hell.
