Yearender 2022: 'Anupamaa' To 'Ghum Hai Kisike Pyaar Mein', TV Serials That Ruled TRP Charts
Rupali Ganguly starrer daily soap 'Anupamaa' reigned the TRP charts this year, marking its position on no.1.
New Delhi: Despite the rise in OTT consumption, especially during the last few years, Indian daily soaps have still not become outdated. With over a hundred tv serials being aired, how is anyone supposed to figure out which ones are currently more popular? Luckily, the BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council) does that work for us by releasing insight data about the most viewed and popular tv programs and serials through TRP.
Let’s take a look at the top 10 chart bursting Indian serials which were in the highest ranks, according to TRP list, this year.
1. Anupama
Based on the Marathi serial, ‘Aai Kuthe Kay Karte,’ Anupama has continued to be in the top 5 ranks on BARC’s charts this year. The show revolves around the life of Anupama (played by Rupali Ganguly) who is a dedicated mother, loving wife and caring daughter-in-law but all of her efforts and sacrifices go unappreciated as no one in the family respects her. Eventually, after realising that she does not spend any time with herself, Anupama starts to live life on her own terms instead of prioritising married household life. This serial airs on Star Plus as well as Disney+ Hotstar.
2. Ghum Hai Kisi Ke Pyaar Mein (GHKKPM)
A remake of Star Jalsha’s Bengali show ‘Kusum Dola,’ GHKKPM is about a typical love triangle, where the protagonist Virat (played by Neil Bhatt) is forced to marry Sayi (Ayesha Singh) under certain circumstances and let his true love for Pakhi (Asihwarya Sharma) slip away. Trapped between going after true love and keeping a promise which Virat made to Sayi’s dying father, the serial shows how one decision leads to a drastic change in three lives. GHKKPM also airs on Star Plus and Disney+ Hotstar.
3. Imlie
Another one of Star Plus and Disney+ Hotstar’s popular serials, the Indian entertainment industry is not alien towards the topic of forced marriages. Imlie, a young girl, is forced into marrying Aditya (Gashmeer Mahajani) which was against their wishes. After Aditya refuses to accept her as a wife since he is in love with another woman, Imlie struggles to get accepted and loved by Aditya’s family and the society. As the program progresses, so does Aditya and Imlie’s relationship which keeps one hooked.
4. Udaariyaan
It is quite unsurprising that this serial is also centred around a love triangle: Fateh Singh Virk (Ankit Gupta) and two sisters, Tejo (Priyanka Choudhary) and Jasmin Sandhu (Isha Malviya). Jasmin agrees to marry Fateh in order to achieve her dream of settling down in Canada meanwhile Fateh is head over heels in love with her. However, like every other Indian daily soap, a happy ending can not be reached that easily. There is a twist in the story when Fateh loses his job and Jasmin breaks off the marriage, so Tejo steps in to save the reputation of her family. Udaariyaan airs on Colors TV and is streamed on Voot.
5. Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (YRKKH)
It is impossible for someone to have not watched at least one episode of this serial while living in an Indian household. One of the longest-running Hindi serials on Star Plus and now also being streamed on Disney+ Hotstar, the show is based on Naira and Kartik (popularly called by their ship name ‘Kaira’) and how the couple has stuck together through various ups and downs which has only made their relationship stronger.
6. Indian Idol Season-13
One of the most popular and loved Indian reality shows, Indian Idol season 13 started in September 2022 and has maintained its rank in the top 10 of BARC’s chart since then. The serial comprises participants, who get shortlisted in the Ground Auditions, coming together to compete in a singing battle.
7. Yeh Hai Chahatein
Airing on Star Plus as well as streaming on Disney+ Hotstar and a spin-off of the popular tv serial ‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein,’ ‘Yeh Hai Chahatein’ is about the life of a single mother - Prisha (Sargun Luthra) - who is raising her nephew Saransh (Yagya Bhasin) after the death of her sister. She gets married to Rudra (Abrar Qazi) who doesn’t believe in love and detests Prisha in the beginning. With each new episode, we can see the progression of Prisha and Rudra’s relationship. Also, Prisha’s parental love towards Saransh is heartwarming to see even though he isn’t her biological son.
8. Saath Nibhana Saathiya 2 (SNS2)
SNS2 is a sequel to the long-running series ‘Saath Nibhana Saathiya,’ airing on Star Plus since 2020 and now on Disney+ Hotstar too. Unlike the original series, this serial is focused on the life of Gehna (Sneha Jain) and Anant (Harsh Nagar). Gehna, a middle-class girl who works as a maid, struggles to assimilate into the rich Desai household upon marrying Anant. To top it off, this marriage attracts a lot of jealousy and conspiracies from other people too but Gehna manages to get past them with Anant’s support.
9. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC)
A tv serial which has been a common household name for the past 14 years would undoubtedly be TMKOC. Giving us a glimpse into the lives of the residents of Gokuldham Society, TMKOC is one of the most entertaining and loved sitcoms where episodes are often also centred around socially relevant issues. The serial airs on Sab TV and is simultaneously being streamed on Sony LIV too.
10. Kundali Bhagya
An extremely complicated bittersweet love story, airing on Zee TV and on the Zee 5 app, there are new twists and turns in Preeta’s (Shraddha Arya) life after she gets married to Karan (Dheeraj Dhoopar) under unconventional circumstances. Karan and Preeta cross paths after getting acquainted through Preeta and Srishti’s (Anjum Fakih) mother, who the sisters meet after the death of their father. The show has taken a turn after Karan's return while Preeta is now married to Karan's elder brother Rishabh.
