New Delhi: ''There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women,''- former UN Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize winner Kofi Annan had said. Doordarshan's 'Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon' returned back with another season in January 2019 and this time, the show focused on issues like sanitation, women’s health and gender discrimination. The lead actress of Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon' Meinal Vaishnav, in an exclusive interview with ABP News, talked about the show's popularity, portrayal of women on the small screen and a lot more. Here are excerpts from the interview How do you feel that your first TV show has become this popular? Ans- It gives me great satisfaction that my first TV show is so popular. I feel it is because of the content of the show, that instantly connects with audiences. It is also a huge responsibility for me. Do you think every artist must have a sense of social responsibility? Ans- Indeed! As an artist, we can have huge impact on our audience. We should use this power to create something beautiful. It’s our responsibility to give back something positive that the audience can enjoy and aspire towards. How do you think can we ensure that the rural India is connected with the urban areas and metro cities? Ans- Why do we have to try to connect rural areas with the urban areas and metros? Why not provide them all the necessary infrastructure there itself and let them live in peace? All the roads from rural India lead to big cities. Why can’t the roads lead back to villages? EXCLUSIVE: Producers should create more realistic stories, says 'Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon' actress Meinal Vaishnav Why did the show's focus shift to sanitation and hygiene in the third season? Ans- The serial has always focused on good health for all, which goes beyond merely providing medical facilities to treat diseases. The show addresses sanitation and hygiene within the overall focus on healthy practices that prevent disease. Season 3 of Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon continues its focus on the issues of women’s empowerment, gender equality and sexual and reproductive health, which are linked to age-old social norms. What do you think should be done to ensure gender equality? Ans- First of all, the concept of male authority needs to be removed, and equal partnership must be inculcated. Women must be accepted as an equal human being and men must be educated about being supportive partners. Boys and girls must be raised with the values that guide them to respect each other rather than burdening one particular gender with all the responsibilities. EXCLUSIVE: Producers should create more realistic stories, says 'Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon' actress Meinal Vaishnav Do you think that the portrayal of women is changing on screen now? Ans- Yes, people are now accepting women in stronger roles on screen, rather than just a heroine dancing around the hero or crying for his attention. The audience has become more realistic and is now ready to explore other sides of a woman beyond being a perfect housewife. This is a good sign. Producers should create more such realistic stories and characters that inspire people to lead a better life. Do you also plan to work on shows with social messaging in the future? Ans-Yes. I believe that it’s my duty to contribute towards the well-being of the world I am born in. I owe that to this planet. I would definitely want to do as much as I can, to send across the right message and bring about positive changes.
