CBFC Orders 17 Changes to Mohnalal-Starrer 'L2: Empuraan' Over Gujarat Riots Depiction

The makers of 'L2: Empuraan' have reportedly agreed to implement changes in the film following concerns over its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The makers of 'L2: Empuraan' have reportedly agreed to implement changes in the film following concerns over its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots. According to the Times of India, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has ordered 17 edits in the Mohanlal-starrer, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran.

CBFC's Intervention in 'L2: Empuraan'

The changes come after intervention from the Centre, with the CBFC’s Kerala team reviewing the film and requesting necessary edits. If the revised version of 'L2: Empuraan' is submitted by Monday, the film will likely be cleared for screening within the next few days.

Producers of 'L2' Agree to Cuts

The film’s producers, led by Gokulam Gopalan, have confirmed their willingness to comply. Speaking to TOI, Gopalan stated that he has instructed director Prithviraj Sukumaran to modify any scenes or dialogues that may have hurt sentiments.

As per ANI, the 17 changes include alterations to riot sequences and violent scenes. The film features a depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots, where one of the perpetrators is shown as the main antagonist—a portrayal that has led to political controversy in Kerala.

Mohanlal and Prithviraj’s Vision for 'L2: Empuraan'

Mohanlal, the legendary actor known for his versatility, reprises his role as Stephen Nedumpally, a powerful and enigmatic character first introduced in 'Lucifer' (2019). The film, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, serves as a highly anticipated sequel, diving deeper into the protagonist’s complex world of politics, power, and crime.

Prithviraj, apart from being a celebrated actor, has cemented his place as a visionary filmmaker. With 'Lucifer' being one of Mollywood’s highest-grossing films, expectations for 'L2: Empuraan' have been sky-high. Despite the ongoing censorship controversy, fans are eager to witness Mohanlal’s magnetic screen presence and Prithviraj’s gripping storytelling.

'L2: Empuraan' Box Office Records

Despite the controversy, 'L2: Empuraan' has been setting box office records. According to Sacnilk.com, the film has become the fastest Malayalam movie to gross ₹100 crore worldwide in just two days.

Additionally, 'L2: Empuraan' has made history as the highest-grossing Malayalam film at the overseas box office.
