Rabindranath Tagore 80th Death Anniversary: Short Films Based On Kobiguru's Work One Can Watch To Remember The Nobel Laureate
On the occasion of Rabindranath Tagore’s death anniversary, here’s a list of the short stories of the Nobel Laureate one can watch on Epic channel remembering the author of ‘Gitanjali’.
Mumbai: The first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in literature, Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore breathed his last on this day 80 years back. From poetry to politics, short stories to novels, Rabindranath Tagore is well known for his literary works all around the globe. Tagore’s writings were way ahead of their time and they also reshaped Bengali literature and music. His compositions have been chosen by two countries as their National Anthem – India and Bangladesh.
Even after 80 years of his death, many directors and storytellers have been recreating the stories of Kobiguru by embellishing his work and bringing the stories to life on screen.

Chokher Bali
‘Chokher Bali’ revolves around four main characters – Mahendra Babu, his friend Bihari Babu, his wife Ashalata and the widow Binodini. This 1903 Bengali novel by Rabindranath Tagore explores the extra-marital affairs of a young widow and also highlights the issues of women literacy, child marriage and patriarchy.
Kabuliwala
This short story by Rabindranath Tagore deals with the filial affection of a fruit seller with a five-year-old girl. ‘Kabuliwala’ was written by Tagore in 1892 and was published in one of Kobiguru’s magazines named ‘Sadhana’. Many movies have also been made based on the very famous short story ‘Kabuliwala’.
Maanbhanjan
‘Maanbhanjan’ tells the story of a spoilt, young zamindar wife who finds her passion for theatre and emerges as a beautiful new actress who takes the place of her husband’s lover Latika. This story not only focuses on the extramarital affairs during that time but also emphasises on its consequences.
Samapti
Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore in this story focuses on the freedom and growth of a girl during that time. The story beautifully discloses her journey as she gradually embraces the changed environment after her marriage and slowly builds a bond with people around her.
Atithi
‘Atithi’ is one of the finest stories of Rabindranath Tagore. It pivots on the life of a man who is curious about the world and keeps on running away. Spontaneous by nature, the protagonist Tarapada impresses a zamindar on one of his boat rides and starts living with them. However, things change when he develops feeling for the daughter of the zamindar.
