The BBC World Service has unveiled a gripping two-part documentary, 'The Killing Call', now available on YouTube. The investigative series shows the life and tragic death of Punjabi music icon Sidhu Moosewala, unpacking the rise of the singer, his controversial affiliations, and the events that led to his shocking murder in 2022.

The docuseries traces Sidhu’s meteoric rise in the Punjabi music industry and examines his early interactions with notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. While their connection reportedly began on friendly terms, the relationship soured dramatically once Sidhu returned to India and began associating with Bishnoi's arch-rivals—the Bambiha gang.

In the second instalment of the documentary, journalist Ishleen Kaur unveils audio messages from gangster Goldy Brar that shed new light on the deteriorating relationship between Sidhu and Bishnoi. In one such message, Brar reveals, "Lawrence was in touch with Sidhu. I don't know who introduced them, and I never asked, but they did speak. Sidhu used to send ‘Good morning’ and ‘Good night’ messages in an effort to flatter Lawrence."

How Moosewala and Bishnoi's relationship soured

The turning point came after Sidhu’s return to India from Canada. His growing closeness with the Bambiha gang, including performing at a Kabaddi match in one of their strongholds, marked the beginning of deepening tensions. The stakes escalated following the murder of Vicky Middukhera—an influential figure and close associate of Bishnoi and Brar.

Although Sidhu publicly denied any link to Vicky’s killing, rumours swirled about his alleged ties to the rival gang, fuelling a vendetta that would ultimately prove fatal. The documentary suggests that this perceived betrayal was a pivotal factor in the decision to target the singer.

Sidhu Moosewala was brutally gunned down on May 29, 2022, in Jawaharke village, Mansa, Punjab. Over 30 rounds were reportedly fired at his vehicle. He was found slumped in the driver’s seat—his death sending shockwaves across the country and sparking an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow artists alike.
