New Delhi: Recently, actress Shefali Shah recalled a time when she was touched inappropriately in a crowded place. Although she claimed that it made her feel like "crap," she made the decision to never talk about it to anyone. She claimed she was embarrassed by it.
Shefali recently participated in a podcast episode where she discussed her breakout role in Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding. She portrayed Ria Verma, a character in the movie who was sexually molested as a young child. Naseeruddin Shah, Lillete Dubey, Vasundhara Das, Vijay Raaz, Rajat Kapoor, Randeep Hooda, and Soni Razdan were among the other actors who appeared in the movie.
While about the film and her character, Shefali also opened up about her experiences. Talking to Smita Prakash of ANI, she told in the podcast, "Like I said earlier, everyone’s gone through it. I remember walking in a crowded market and being touched inappropriately and feeling crap about it. And, never ever saying anything because I wouldn’t say it was guilt but it’s just…shameful.”
Smita added, “And wondering if you did anything to invite it?” the actor responded, “Yes. I agree with you. A lot of people think, did I do anything? You feel guilty, shameful and you feel ‘bhool jao (forget it). Shove it under the carpet kind of thing’. Honestly, I don’t think I gave it so much thought that it’s an important conversation to speak. It was just something that struck straight inside me and the entire film.”
The plot of 'Monsoon Wedding' centres around family members getting together for a wedding in Delhi and their love interactions. It had its world premiere during the 2001 Cannes Film Festival's Marché du Film. Also, it received a Golden Globe nomination and won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival.
Shefali has appeared in a number of critically acclaimed movies including Rangeela, Satya, Monsoon Wedding, Waqt, Gandhi, My Father, and Dil Dhadakne Do, among others. She gave three outstanding performances back-to-back in Jalsa, Darlings, and Doctor G last year.
