Ramanand Sagar's Son On 'Adipurush': 'Om Raut Has Tried To Make A Marvel Film...'

Ramanand Sagar's 'Ramayan' on Doordarshan channel is often seen as a benchmark among the many adaptations of the great Hindu epic.

New Delhi: 'Adipurush' has received mixed reactions upon its release on Friday. The Prabhas, Kriti Sanon starrer has also become a big target of memes and that is very evident on social media platforms like Twitter. Dialogues and VFX of the film and the portrayal of Raavan as a deadly villain with no reference to his intelligence and learning, among many other aspect, has been facing a lot of criticism from all quarters. Recently, Ramana Sagar's son Prem Sagar made some comments about 'Adipurush'.

Who is Ramanand Sagar

For those unaware, Ramanand Sagar's 'Ramayan' on Doordarshan channel is often seen as a benchmark among the many adaptations of the great Hindu epic. While Mr. Sagar passed away in 2005, he is fondly remembered for his adaptation across the world. Now, his son Prem Sagar spoke about the recent controversy and criticism that Om Raut's 'Adipurush' has been facing.

While Prem Sagar is yet to watch 'Adipruush', in an interaction with Hindustan Live, he said that even his father took some creative liberties with the show but 'never messed around with facts'.

Prem Sagar's comments on Adipurush

When asked about a dialogue of Hanuman during the 'Lanka Dahan' scene which goes something like this, "Tel tere baap ka, kapra tere baap ka aur jalegi bhi tere baap ki", Prem laughed and said, “Om Raut has tried to make a Marvel film. Papaji (Ramanand Sagar) did take some creative liberties while making Ramayana but he understood Lord Ram. He read various scriptures and then made a few changes but never messed around with facts.”

When it was shared that the film has been made keeping in mind the sensibilities of today's youth, Prem said, "Then they should show the film in Breach Candy or Colaba. Don’t show it worldwide. Don’t hurt people’s sentiments. Krittivasi and Eknath also made Ramayana but they never changed the content. They only changed the colour or language but here all the facts seemed to be changed.”

Speaking about Raavan being a learned man who could not be reduced to just a villain, he added, "Many scriptures also say that Lord Ram himself considered Raavan as a great learned man… you cannot present Raavan as a deadly villain in the name of creative liberty."

'Adipurush' has been facing a lot of controversy for its dialogues and VFX. Many have also criticized the colloquial nature of Hanuman's dialogues in the film. However, the film's writer Manoj Muntashir has defended the dialogues by stating that everything was kept in mind before being written.

In an interview with Republic world, Manoj said, "It is not an error. A very meticulous thought process that has gone into writing the dialogues for Bajrangbali. We have made it simple because we have to understand one thing (that) if there are multiple characters in a film, all of them can’t speak the language. There has to be a kind of diversion, a division.”
