Narendra Chanchal Death: Veteran Bhajan Singer Passes Away At 80; Daler Mehndi, Harbhajan Singh & Other Celebs Express Grief

Narendra Chanchal left for his heavenly abode on January 22 at the age of 80.

Veteran bhajan singer Narendra Chanchal passed away at Delhi’s Apollo hospital after prolonged illness. He was 80. The singer was hospitalised since the last two months as he was not keeping well. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the demise of  Shri Narendra Chanchal.

“News of the death of popular bhajan singer Narendra Chanchal is extremely sad. He left a strong impression in the field of singing with with his vibrant voice. I offer my condolences to his family and fans,” PM Modi tweeted.

Singer Daler Mehndi also expressed grief and offered his condolences on social media. He tweeted, "Deeply saddened to learn that iconic and most loved #NarendraChanchal ji   has left us for the heavenly abode. In prayers for his soul to rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences to his family and legions of fans."

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh penned an emotional post on Twitter. “Deeply saddened to learn that iconic and most loved #NarendraChanchal ji has left us for the heavenly abode. In prayers for his soul to rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences to his family,” Bhajji wrote on the micro-blogging site.

Narendra Chanchal Visited Katra Every Year

After years of struggle, Narendra Chanchal crooned the song ‘Beshak Mandir Masjid’ for the film ‘Bobby’. He was honoured with the Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for the hit nu,ber. The bhajan maestro earned honorary citizenship of Georgia in the United States. His popular song 'Chalo, Bulaawa Aaya Hai, Maata Ne Bulaaya Hai' is still played during the Navratri festival.

Narendra Chanchal was born in Namak Mandi, Amritsar on October 16, 1940. The religious atmosphere in his family inspired him to start singing bhajan and hymns. He released an autobiography called ‘Midnight Singer’ which narrated the struggles, hardships and achievements in his life. He visited Katra Vaishno Devi every year in the month of December.
