No Theatrical Release for Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency In Bangladesh

Indira Gandhi's role in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, where she defied the U.S. to intervene in the conflict with Pakistan, is central to the story.

Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming directorial ‘Emergency’, which portrays the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, will not be released in Bangladesh due to the escalating political tensions between the two countries.

Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency will not be released in Bangladesh

The film, which delves into the tumultuous period of India’s 1975 Emergency, finds itself caught in the midst of a geopolitical standoff. A source close to the matter stated, "The decision to halt the screening of ‘Emergency’ in Bangladesh is tied to the current strained relations between India and Bangladesh. The ban is less about the content of the film and more about the ongoing political dynamics between the two nations."

Indira Gandhi's role in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, where she defied the U.S. to intervene in the conflict with Pakistan, is central to the story. India’s involvement in the war ultimately led to the creation of Bangladesh, but the film also highlights the strong ties between Gandhi and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Bangladesh. Rahman, who referred to Gandhi as "Goddess Durga," received India’s support during the war, an event that remains a critical part of the historical narrative.

About Emergency

‘Emergency’ also touches on the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by Bangladeshi extremists, a significant point that many believe contributed to the film’s ban in Bangladesh.

Though India and Bangladesh once shared a strong alliance, particularly during the 1971 conflict, the political landscape has shifted dramatically. With the change in leadership in Bangladesh, tensions between the two nations have risen, altering the once-friendly dynamics. Today, India faces increasing challenges from neighboring countries, including China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Afghanistan under Taliban control.
