Kalki 2898 AD first half review: Nag Ashwin’s 'Kalki 2898 AD' is a bold and ambitious venture that merges the ancient epic of the Mahabharata with a futuristic, dystopian setting. The film begins 6000 years after the events of the Mahabharata, plunging the audience into the morally decadent era of Kali Yuga. Here, the Supreme God Yaskin, portrayed by Kamal Haasan, rules over a world teetering on the edge of collapse. 

Plot and setting

The film's narrative is its strongest suit, weaving mythology and science fiction into a compelling storyline. The opening sequence, a grand depiction of a scene from the Mahabharata, sets a high bar for the rest of the movie. The effort put into this sequence is evident, earning full marks for its execution and visual splendour. 

Characters and performances

The star-studded cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan, delivers performances that drive the film forward. 

Amitabh Bachchan shines as Ashwattama, depicting both his youthful vigour and his aged wisdom with equal prowess. His performance is a delight, and fans will especially enjoy seeing him sing on screen. 

Prabhas brings his action-hero persona to the film, with moments of humour that add depth to his otherwise intense character. 

Deepika Padukone plays a pivotal role with a moving performance that anchors the emotional core of the story. 

Supporting cast

The film also features a robust supporting cast: 

Diljit Dosanjh provides a standout moment with his Bhairava anthem, adding a much-needed spark to Prabhas’s action sequences. 

Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur, and Ram Gopal Varma make brief appearances, adding value to the narrative despite their limited screen time. 

Saswata Chatterjee and Kamal Haasan feel under-utilised in the first half, leaving the audience hoping for more from these talented actors as the film progresses.
