Popular Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith has been arrested after a young actress accused him of trying to sexually assault her. The complaint has put the director in the spotlight, while police are said to be handling the case quietly. Ranjith was taken into custody on Tuesday after the actress filed a complaint accusing him of improper behaviour during a film shoot.
The case was registered by the Ernakulam Central Police, and a special team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Kochi carried out the arrest under the guidance of senior officers, including the IG of Ernakulam Range and the Idukki Superintendent of Police. Using mobile location data, police traced Ranjith to Thodupuzha and took him into custody. He is now being held there and will be handed over to Kochi police for further questioning.

According to the complaint, the actress, who is currently working in a film directed by Ranjith, said the incident happened on the set during the shoot. The film was being shot in Kottayam and Kochi, and the alleged incident is said to have taken place in Kochi.
The actress had earlier submitted a complaint to senior police officers, including the Director General of Police. Her statement was recorded at a women’s police station two days earlier, after which police moved ahead with the case.
An FIR has been filed at Udayamperoor Police Station under Section 376 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the case has been kept private.
