Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan calls out the UK Supreme Court ruling on trans rights and criticises J.K. Rowling’s reaction. Read what she said here.

The UK Supreme Court's recent ruling defining the legal term 'woman' as someone who is biologically female at birth has sparked widespread debate across communities, activists, and celebrities. Among those expressing their disappointment is Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, popularly known as Lady Whistledown.
JK Rowling's reaction to the UK court's ruling
The controversy began when author J.K. Rowling publicly celebrated the ruling, claiming it as a victory for protecting the rights of women and girls in the UK. Rowling, known for her divisive opinions on gender identity, took to X (formerly Twitter), writing: "It took three extraordinary, tenacious Scottish women with an army behind them to get this case heard by the Supreme Court, and, in winning, they’ve protected the rights of women and girls across the UK.”

Nicola Coughlan responded by resharing a post from The Cut titled "This Is a New Low for J.K. Rowling.” She added a caption that read, "Keep your new Harry Potter lads, wouldn’t touch [the series] with a ten-foot pole," in reference to the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series based on the original seven books.
Coughlan also posted a video message for her followers on social media, calling the ruling “completely horrifying.”
"To see an already marginalised community be further attacked — and attacked in law — is stomach-turning and disgusting," she said. "And to see people celebrate it is even more disgusting.”
The Bridgerton actress urged allies to use their voices and stand up for the trans community.

"If you are a cisgender person who is an ally of a trans person, now is the time to speak up and make your voice heard. Let your trans, nonbinary friends, and the wider community know that you’re there for them and will keep fighting for them,” she concluded.
Meanwhile, Rowling has faced criticism over the years for her stance on gender identity, having reportedly supported groups like For Women Scotland, which advocate for legally defining 'woman' based solely on biological sex. Although the court’s ruling upheld legal protections for trans people against discrimination, it clarified that for certain legal purposes, even with official documents, trans women would not be considered 'women'.
