For music lovers, Instagram has become a gateway to discover music across language and boundaries. Catchy tunes can transcend borders and languages, uniting listeners across the globe. 

If we speak particularly about India, Instagram, with its short-form video format (Reels), acts as a perfect stage for showcasing regional music. A captivating dance sequence featuring a peppy Telugu track or a montage set to a beautiful pahadi song can spark nationwide attention. Viewers are drawn to the energy and emotions conveyed, even if they don't understand the lyrics. 

Many regional songs became pan-Indian anthems despite their regional roots. Here are a few such songs:

Gotilo (Gujarati): A collaboration between singers Aditya Gadhvi and Achint, this Gujarati track, with its catchy chorus featuring the word 'Gotilo' (meaning "sailor"), took social media by storm. Reels showcasing energetic dances and travel montages soundtracked by the song flooded Instagram. 

Gulabi Saree (Marathi): Going viral currently, the Marathi song by Sanju Rathod and Prajakta Ghag, is winning hearts on Instagram. Reels featuring couples, mother-son duo or friends dancing on this song and doing the signature step has become a trend. 

Gulabi sharara (Kumwaoni): This pahadi song from Uttarakhand became a hit on Instagram last year, with everyone across the country dancing to the catchy tune. 

Kacha Badam (Bengali): This quirky song by a peanut seller from West Bengal became a national sensation in 2022. 

Unaku Thaan (Tamil): The heartwarming melody of 'Unaku Thaan' from the Tamil film 'Chiththa' provides another compelling example of Instagram's ability to propel regional songs to national fame. The song became viral after singer Sarah Black made a reel on her rendition of the song.  

Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan (Tamil): An old Tamil song from Kamal Haasan starrer ‘Gunaa’ went viral in 2024 because the Malayalam film ‘Manjummel Boys’ used it. Sung by Kamal Haasan and S Janaki, music is by Ilayaraaja. 

Kaavaalaa (Tamil): The song from the 2023 Tamil film 'Jailer', was released on February 14, 2023, and quickly became popular on Instagram. The song is composed by Anirudh Ravichander and sung by Shilpa Rao and Anirudh Ravichander.

Punjabi music has undergone a meteoric rise, transcending regional boundaries and becoming a prominent force in Indian pop culture in recent years.
