When Imtiaz Ali Told AR Rahman To Make A 'Kharab Gaana' For UP-Bihar Market That Would Be A Hit
Imtiaz Ali still remembers the experience of working on "Sheher Mein Hoon Main Tere Aake Zara Mil Toh Le,” as Rockstar clocks 13 years
New Delhi: Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri's film ‘Rockstar’, directed by Imtiaz Ali, is still praised for performances, plot and AR Rahman's soundtrack. The majority of the album's standout songs, including "Sadda Haq," "Tum Ho," "Nandaan Parindey," "Kun Faaya," and "Phir Se Udd Chala," were sung by Mohit Chauhan. However, the filmmaker still remembers the experience of working on "Sheher Mein Hoon Main Tere Aake Zara Mil Toh Le,” as the film clocks 13 years.
Imtiaz Ali on Sheher Mein
In an interview with Fever FM, the director, who is currently promoting his upcoming film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, said, “When we wanted to make the song, the brief that we gave Rahman sir was ‘Ek kharab gaana banana hai (we have to make a bad song).”
“The song is bizarre. The lyrics are vague and there is no sur aur taal (there’s no melody). I told him ‘Aisa gana jo UP Bihar mein kamaal kar de (Make a song that takes the states of UP and Bihar by storm).’ Rahman sir would go like ‘Okay, okay!” Ali added.
Mohit Chauhan, AR Rahman, and Imtiaz Ali have worked together on a number of films over the years, including 'Highway', 'Tamasha', and the upcoming 'Amar Singh Chamkila', which stars Diljit Dosanjh. Imitiaz continued, discussing their friendship and how it facilitates their ability to compose music together.

The filmmaker said, “The entire process of making the songs in my film primarily involves three people, Rahman sir, Mohit and me. So what keeps us reuniting with each other? Well, we are informal with each other, and that’s why we come back together and work again. We have a lot of fun together. We joke and use gaalis and that’s what keeps our bond strong. An onlooker might wonder how could we talk to each other in that manner," in the same interaction.
“There have never been creative conflicts between me and AR Rahman. I immediately go into surrender mode when working with him.” Imtiaz Ali told Mashable India in a recent interview.
