New Delhi: The trailer of Imtiaz Ali’s musical spectacle 'Amar Singh Chamkila’ was released on Thursday. Written and directed by Imtiaz, the film stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra.

The movie tells the untold story of Punjab's iconic figure, Amar Singh Chamkila, a rockstar revered by the masses and boasting record-breaking sales during his era. Emerging from the depths of poverty, he ascended to the pinnacle of fame in the 1980s solely through the potency of his music, inciting ire along his journey. Tragically, he was assassinated at the age of 27.

Renowned music composer AR Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil are teaming up for the film, bringing back the magic of their collaboration with director Imtiaz Ali after nine years. The film's songs, 'Ishq Mitaye' and 'Naram Kaalja,' were released earlier this month.

Adding to the excitement, actors Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra have contributed their voices to some of the original Punjabi songs by Chamkila. The film will feature live music recordings done on location, capturing the authenticity and energy of each moment as Diljit and Parineeti perform live in the Akhadaas.

Imtiaz Ali on Amar Singh Chamkila
Reflecting on the journey of creating Amar Singh Chamkila, Imtiaz Ali shared, "Stories of young musicians that challenge the norms of society, who see unprecedented success and then have violent ends is unfortunately a worldwide phenomenon. The life and times of Chamkila raised important questions for society but ultimately it is a celebration of the life of an artist, the story of a musician who could never give up his first love - Music. In Netflix, Amar Singh Chamkila found the ideal partner who was both passionate and able to take the film to the most diverse audience."

The film, produced by Mohit Choudhary, Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films, will premiere on Netflix on April 12.
