When Abhishek Bachchan Left College To Support Dad Amitabh Amid Rs 90 Crore Debt: 'Had To Borrow Money For Food'

Veteran star Amitabh Bachchan once struggled with a massive debt of Rs 90 crore. During this challenging time, his son, Abhishek, made every effort to support him.

New Delhi: Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan has overcome obstacles and achieved great success throughout his life. Despite suffering several early professional disappointments, his luck turned around in 1973 with the release of 'Zanjeer', which propelled him to stardom. After his production company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL), declared bankruptcy, the actor faced a major financial problem with debts nearing Rs 90 crore.

His family was greatly affected by this difficult time, and Amitabh Bachchan’s son Abhishek Bachchan dropped out of Boston University to support his father. Reflecting on the tough decision he had to make, Abhishek said in an interview with Ranveer Allahbadia, “Truth be told, I left university — I was studying in Boston University… I left my education because my father was going through this really rough time, financially. He had started this business called ABCL,”

He added, “I called him and I said ‘You know dad, I think I want to leave college half-way and come back and just be with you… At least you’ll know that your boy is next to you and he’s there for you’.”

With Abhishek, Amitabh opened up about his problems during this difficult period, saying,  “Movies aren’t working out, the business isn’t working out, nothing is working out.”

Amitabh Bachchan on His Darkest Career Phase

Amitabh Bachchan discussed "one of the darkest periods" of his remarkable 44-year career in a discussion with India Today. He remembered, “I can never forget how creditors used to land at our door, be abusive, threatening and demanding, and worse still, when they came for ‘Kudkee’ at Prateeksha, our residence.”

Actor Rajinikanth recently recalled a defining experience from this challenging period during an audio launch ceremony. He said that Bachchan's financial situation was so dire that he had to liquidate his Juhu residence and other assets.
